Physical geography
Romania, 238,391 km², is in the east of Europe. It is bordered by the Black Sea. The Danube, the second longest river in Europe, goes through it.

Iconic place
The parliament building in Bucharest is the second biggest administrative building in the world (300,000m²). It was designed by Anca Petrescu and was completed in 1997.


Famous historical figure
Vlad III, aka “Vlad the Impellor,” was a 15th century Wallachian prince. He is remembered for his horrific acts of torture and killing. Bram Stoker’s Draculawas inspired by Vlad III.


Famous living person
Vladimir Cosma was born in 1940. He is famous mostly for his film music.

History before 2000
Romania joined the fight against the Germans in 1914. Ferdinand I took this decision because Transylvania had been promised to him as reward, but, in 1916, the central powers beat the Romanian army. Bucharest was occupied until the end of the war. Romania became communist after WW2.

Human geography
The population of Romania is about 20 million.

Language and culture
Romanian is the official language. Football is the most popular pastime. Mămăligă and Gălușcă are the most famous culinary specialities.


Political system and economy
The capital is Bucharest, situated in the south. The currency is the Leu. The average wage (2008 figure) is the equivalent of 350€/month. Most people are poor…
