Physical geography
Belgium is situated in Western Europe. This country is to the north of France, under the Netherlands and to the left of Germany and Luxembourg. It is a flat country (the highest point is 694 meters). It is separated into three regions (depending on the language spoken) and into 10 provinces. Belgium has 67 kilometres of sea coast along the North Sea.

An iconic place
The Atomium, built in 1958, made of steel and aluminium, represents a big atom. Each “ball” has a particular use: exhibition space, restaurant, panorama, etc. Renovated from 2004 to 2006 it is now 102 meters tall. There are escalators connecting the spheres. It’s in Brussels, Belgium’s capital.

An iconic object
Potato fries come from Belgium and are a favourite fast food.

Something the country has done for the world
Belgium is a founding member of the European Union. Most EU buildings are in Brussels.

Famous historical figure
Georges Remi, aka Hergé, 1907-1983, was the most important Belgian cartoonist. He was the creator of the famous Tintin, a young reporter who travels all around the world.

Important living person
Jean-Claude Van Damme, born in 1960, is a well-known action film actor. He’s also a bodybuilder, a martial arts expert, and a film director.

Human geography
Belgium has a good level of health. Average life expectancy is 80 years.

Languages and cultures
French and Flemish.
